“Americans, like human beings everywhere, believe many things that are obviously untrue. Their most destructive untruth is that it is very easy for any American to make money. They will not acknowledge how in fact hard money is to come by, and, therefore, those who have no money blame and blame and blame themselves. This inward blame has been a treasure for the rich and powerful, who have had to do less for their poor, publicly and privately, than any other ruling class since, say, Napoleonic times.” —Kurt Vonnegut
Disagree. Based on observations of my friends in various parts of the country, for the majority, it’s actually quite easy to acquire money. The question, I suppose, is whether it’s easy to make “enough” money or easy to make “lots” of money.
“It is a crime for an American to be poor, even though America is a nation of poor. Every other nation has folk traditions of men who were poor but extremely wise and virtuous, and therefore more estimable than anyone with power and gold. No such tales are told by the American poor. They mock themselves and glorify their betters. The meanest eating or drinking establishment, owned by a man who is himself poor, is very likely to have a sign on its wall asking this cruel question: ‘If you’re so smart, why ain’t you rich?’” —Kurt Vonnegut
Agree.

I encourage the people sharing their stories to view how they might be perceived by those they are fighting against. For instance, a piece of paper that says you have a masters doesn’t mean anything more than you found the financial resources to earn a degree and did your homework to receive the certificate. The degree means nothing. Your brain means something. Show people you are smart.
Telling someone you had a job for a really long time (and got laid off) or that you went to college (and racked up tons of debt) or that your can’t afford insurance (and you’ve become sick) makes it appear you are trying to earn pity. But doesn’t tell me what you’ve done with your degree. Or what talents you have that made your former employer keep you on as long as they did. Or why you are in poor health.
I really hate to see so many people in this mess. The way out is to communicate well, show and use your skills, work very hard, be persistent, be nice.
And finally, if you are protesting on Wall Street, dress smart. The medium is part of the message.
ryan: “why are there food scraps all over the kitchen?” me: “i was in a hurry to eat.” ryan: “i see.” me: “well, somebody had to make a huge fucking mess all over the house.” ryan: “yeah, somebody had to live like a shameless fucking pig of a bitch”
And that is why my new favorite phrase is “Pig of a bitch.”

In the 1970s, my grandpa lived in Anchorage, Alaska, hosting people from all over the world. He’s been hosting couchsurfers since way before couchsurfing.org. It’s something wonderful to help a traveler, someone who is interested in experiencing other ways of life. In the early 1980s, he decided to move back to the Lower 48.
My grandpa built himself a home in the mountains of northern Idaho. He had several acres of property, and on it, he built a small shelter for any traveler who might need a place to sleep. It was very small, but had a bed and some supplies along with a note to travelers welcoming them to use the shelter.
No matter what situation he was in, he would find some way to provide for others.
